Barons Volleyball Showing Flashes of Brilliance

The Barons Womens Volleyball team has recently passed the half-way point in their schedule. Currently standing at 4 wins and 7 losses, the team has shown flashes of brilliance, giving all Barons fans optimism regarding the team’s hunt for an ORCC Title in 2013!

“Our team has the ability to play hard, play together, and win. We lost our first 4 games of the season, made some changes, and then won 4 straight. We need to continue to have drive and passion to win.” Said Head Coach, Jill Ricker.

The Barons’ biggest win of the year so far is definitely the 5 set thriller with 2012 ORCC Champion, Miami University Middletown! “That game was intense and it could have gone either way. We ended up winning it in game 5, 15 to 13, which was a huge win for us on the road at Middletown, an annual rival of ours.” Added Ricker.

With a stretch of very important games coming up for the Barons, we asked Coach Ricker about some of the challenges from early in the season and where she believes the team can make strides to have the success they are striving for. “Our players are well prepared and know what they are supposed to do in a game. At this point, a lot of our errors are mental.”

The Barons have had a tough schedule this year as their first 8 contests were on the road, but have had their last three at home as well as their next two. “We have dedicated parents that always show up on road games which iscomforting for the athletes. Then, the pep band played at our first home game, which was awesome. The band is scheduled to play at one more game this season, so the more support we can get at home games, the better.” Replied Coach Ricker, as to how the Barons are handling the difficult schedule thus far.

The Barons are having their success thanks to several contributors on the team, showing that depth of talent Coach Ricker talked about early in the season. Statistically, Carley Springer and Diana Basinger are leading the team in kills, Courtney St. John is leading the team in aces, Courtney and Alyssa St. John are tied for the team lead in assists, Diana Basinger is the team leader in blocks, and Carley Springer and Kayla Luangraj are both leading the team in digs.

Come on out to watch the Barons compete in The Hangar. Upcoming home contests include (9/23/13- 7pm vsU. of Findlay JV, 9/25/13- 7pm vs Lorain CC, 9/30/13- 7pm vs UNOH, 10/5/13- 1pm vs Miami University Middletown).
